Jerrod Carmichael was born on June 22, 1987 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was raised by his parents and older brother, Joe Carmichael Jr., in the Morningside neighborhood of the city. His mother, Cynthia, worked as a secretary while his father, Joe Carmichael Sr, was a truck driver.
Carmichael attended Robert B. Glenn High School, graduating in 2005. It was during his high school years that he began to hone his acting skills and learn public speaking. In fifth grade, he was able to host a morning news show on his elementary school’s local access channel.
In 2008, a few years after graduation at the age of 20, Jerrod moved to Los Angeles to pursue theater and his acting career. He tried it before he even tried it. Growing up in poverty, Carmichael often used it as a subject in his humor. His first show was an open mic night at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood. He went through many other clubs for a few years before performing and performing during the “New Faces” show at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal in 2011.
In 2014, Carmichael got his epic role, appearing alongside Seth Rogan and Zac Efron as a member of Delta Psi Beta in comedy. Neighbors. The show received rave reviews and praised for pushing boundaries on political and racial topics throughout its three seasons. The show ended in June 2017 after Carmichael announced his departure to pursue other projects. It’s unclear exactly what those other projects are, but Jerrod had, during the show’s third season airing, released a second HBO special titled Jerrod Carmichael: 8, on March 11, 2017. This one was filmed in the Grand Lodge room of New York Masonic Hall and directed by comedian Bo Burnham.
